Couple months ago the US Senate committee has approved new legislation entitled Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, which suggests that the US government considers the Cyberspace to be part of its property, what means that the US President has the powers to shut down large parts of the internet if there is a “national emergency”.
I hope never happen any exceptional circumstance, but if it does happen shutting down internet is the correct way to protect any person or government who use Internet for good?
Another example, in a smaller scale, has happened to RIM, who is the developer of Blackberry. They´ve faced growing scrutiny over its e-mail and messaging service in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, India and Indonesia. In Saudi Arabia they were allow to continue offering its service after reached an agreement that will allow the government to monitor messages.
In Turkey youtube.com is blocked and Russia is going to restrict its access on September 1st,
I took a screen shot of youtube´s website in Turkey, which is on the right and it means:
London 1 Criminal Court of Peace, CONSERVATION MEASURES under No. 2008/402 dated 05.05.2008 of this web site (youtube.com) about the decision is implemented Telecommunications Chair.
(The Decision No. 2008/402 dated 05.05.2008, which is given about this web site (youtube.com) within the context of the protection measure, the Criminal Court of Peace has been in Ankara 1 Implemented by “Other Telecommunications)..
Going to almost a personal example of control I want to mention Anna Lenzer’s story, she was a blogger traveling in Fiji. Anna was investigating the relationship between Fiji water and the dictatorial government of the island and after posting about the corrupt politics supported by not clear founds´ she was caught and kicked out of the island.
In the other hand, we have wikileaks.org, which is an international organization that publishes anonymous submissions and leaks preserving the anonymity of sources and even with all the different blockages, restrictions and attacks that has been facing, they grew traffic and presence.
